R-CITY PARENTS’ PROGRAMME

About The Programme:

The parents programme has been recently developed due a youth consultation we participated in which highlighted the need for opportunities for parents while over the years there’s been many of requests and interest as they’ve followed their young people through their R-City journey. This programme aims to give the participants an experience similar to the young people through a range of different methods all in partnership with Queen’s University Belfast.

1 - Personal & Social Development (PSD)

Themed workshops focusing on enabling the parents the opportunity to develop new skills & qualities, identify areas where they would like to improve and work towards developing these.

2 - Goal Setting

At the beginning of the programme the parents have the opportunity to set themselves new goals based around aspects within their life such as personal, educationally & socially. Ensuring that it is a reminder your never too old to set new goals and achieve them. The goals are reviewed throughout the programme to check in on progress and what more can be done to achieve them.

3 - Awareness

Using guest speakers who focus on topics of relevance and interest for the parents as someone they can relate to. It helps them to understand others and their circumstances while learning more about different people, communities & issues.

4 - Social Action

Exploring and developing an understanding of the issues within R communities & identifying a relevant and arising issue that we believe we can make a positive difference to.

5 - Further Education

Through discussions with the group at the beginning of the programme, a key finding was that they all wanted to gain qualifications and further their education due to missed opportunities in school. Working towards Level 2 OCN’s and gaining new knowledge and understanding on topics of interest.

6 - Partnership

Proud to partner with Queen’s University Belfast for this programme. This has offered R parents the opportunity to network, build meaningful relationships, raise their aspirations and get an insight into Queen’s University. Alongside their help in the design & facilitation of the programme.

“IT’s just something really different, and great to see just what our kids have the opportunity to do, while getting to experience it for myself.”
